Week 5 (21/10/2013)
1. We had meeting at Block B of main library.
2. We refered to the sample review and discussed on the movie Karate Kid and A Walk To Remember.
3. We discussed together in order to write out the most suitable answer for all the guide questions.

Guide Questions

During Movie:

1. Who are the 5 most important characters in the film? List out the names of the actors playing them.
  • Shane West as Landon Rollins Carter
  • Mandy Moore as Jamie Elizabeth Sullivan-Carter
  • Peter Coyote as Reverend Hegbert Sullivan
  • Daryl Hannah as Cynthia Carter
  • Lauren German as Belinda

2. What is the story about?
A Walk to Remember was inspired by Nicholas Sparks' sister, Danielle Sparks Lewis, who died of cancer in 2000. In a speech he gave after her death in Berlin, the author admits that "In many ways, Jamie Sullivan was my younger sister". The plot was inspired by her life; Danielle met a man who wanted to marry her, "even when he knew she was sick, even when he knew that she might not make it". Both the book and film are dedicated to Danielle Sparks Lewis.
It was filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the same time that Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002) and the TV show Dawson's Creek were being filmed there. Many of the sets were from Dawson's Creek (1998) - specifically the school, hospital and Landon's houses. The total shooting time was only 39 days, despite Mandy Moore being able to only work 10 hours a day because she was a minor. Daryl Hannah, who wore a brown wig as her character, had received a collagen injection in her lips, which went awry and caused noticeable swelling. By the end of filming, however, the symptoms were less obvious.

Jaden Smith as Dre Parker
Jackie Chan as Mr. Han
Wenwen Han as Meiying
Taraji P. Henson as Sherry Parker

2. What is the story about?
A 12-year-old boy who called Dre Parker move from Detroit to Beijing with his mother Sherry after his mother getting a job transfer. Dre managed to get closer to a young violinist, Mei Ying, who attracts his attention. On the other hand, Cheng, a rebellious kung fu prodigy whose family is close to Mei Ying's, attempts to keep them apart by beating Dre, and later bullies him at school. During the attack, Mr. Han comes to save Dre out of danger, revealing himself as a kung fu master.
After Han heals Dre's injuries using fire cupping, Dre asks whether Mr. Han could teach him kung fu. Han refuses, but meets Cheng's teacher, Master Li, to make peace. Li, who teaches his students to show no mercy to their enemies, challenges Dre to a fight with Cheng.
Later then, Han promises to teach Dre "real" kung fu. Han begins training Dre, Han emphasises that the movements Dre is learning apply to life in general, and that serenity and maturity, not punches and power, are the true keys to mastering the martial arts.
One day, Dre goes to Han at night and finds a drunk Han, smashing a car he was working on. Han tells Dre that he has been crashed the same car every year. His wife and ten-year old son was with him and died in the car crash. Han fixes the car every year but smashes it to remind himself of what happened. Dre shows Han the kung fu techniques he learned while his mother arrives and watches him.
As Dre's getting closer to Mei Ying, Dre persuades Mei Ying to cut school for a day of fun, but when she is nearly late for her violin audition which was brought forward a day without their knowledge, her parents deem him a bad influence and forbid her from spending more time with him. Han assists Dre in writing a note of apology to Mei Ying's father in Chinese. Mei Ying's father accepts and promises that Mei Ying is allowed to attend the tournament to support Dre.
At the tournament, the under-confident Dre is slow to achieve parity with his opponents, but soon begins beating them and managed to get into the semi-final, so does Cheng, who brutally finishes off his opponents. Dre comes up against Liang, badly injured.
Despite Han's insistence that he has earned respect for his performance, Dre convinces Han to aid his leg by using fire cupping in order to continue. Dre returns to the arena, facing Cheng. Dre delivers impressive blows, but Cheng counters with a strike to Dre's injured leg. Dre struggles to get up, and attempts the reflection technique to manipulate Cheng into changing his attack stance. Cheng charges Dre, but Dre flips and catches Cheng with a kick to his head, winning the tournament along with the respect of Cheng and his classmates. Cheng instead of the presenter awards Dre the trophy, and the Fighting Dragon students bow to Mr. Han...
